10 Important Life Lessons I Learned From Making Oboe Reeds

by Khara Wolf | Jan 5, 2014 | Music Education

1. Life’s Cycles There are no shortcuts when making an oboe reed. It seems to be human nature to spend our lives looking for an easier road. Making a reed requires a detailed process of cane sorting, splitting, measuring, pre-gouging, gouging, tying, and then finally...

I go through cycles with my reed cases. Sometime I go through cycles with my reed cases.

Sometimes everything is in one (I have two different 50-reed cases 🤭)

Sometimes I just do oboe and EH in a double case (got two of those too lol).

🏠 Right now I’ve got everything in their own little houses. 🏠

Ps those oboe reeds are like three years old. And yes….I am going to practice on them. 😂

🔸Must have SEO strategy to get local students a 🔸Must have SEO strategy to get local students and customers!🔸

What is first thing you usually see when you Google something?

Have you ever noticed the map that shows up at the top of the page with the business listings?

You have probably invested resources in SEO for your creative freelance business, music studio, or small business, but maybe you still aren't showing up in that-map area at the top of the page?

The secret is Google My Business! (now called Google Business Profile)

This is a free service provided by Google where you can create a business profile.

However, it isn't quite that simple.

It isn't just about having a profile, but optimizing it. But don't worry, I have you covered!

In this month's FREE article, I go through how to leverage a Google My Business listing to beat out the competition and make it to the first page of Google as a local business.

If you are wanting to attract local students, clients, and customers as part of your marketing strategy, this step is an SEO must!

Are you a little worried about how your reeds will Are you a little worried about how your reeds will play at high altitude?

Yeah, I know the feeling....I feel it every time I travel to sea level! 🌊 😅

With over 20 years of reed making experience above 5000 feet, mountain reeds are my jam. 🗻

If you are traveling to Boulder this summer for the 51st IDRS conference, or have any upcoming travels to higher elevations, I've got you covered.

I am super excited to announce my article An Analytical Guide to the Variables That Affect High-Altitude Oboe Reeds has been published in the @idrsofficial journal The Double Reed Vol. 45 No. 1. It can be found at idrs.org.

This article will help you figure out what to do before you leave.
It covers all the variables you might want to consider, and includes suggestions to correct for the altitude issues you might face.

P.S. The journal is a member resource, so login is required to read it (for those of you out there that are IDRS members).

However, the fancy version isn't the only one! My original blog article on this topic is still live on my website and contains similar info as well. [link in bio—click on the “music resources” button]

Bonus... these suggestions work for English horn reeds too!

Me: I should stop buying thread.

Also me: 💻 🧵 🛒 💳

Got this cute basket 🧺 as a gift for my bday so taking a break from the thread rack (which incidentally was full and out of room anyway after my last shopping spree 😂)
