🌟 New Blog! Getting back in shape on the oboe a 🌟 New Blog! Getting back in shape on the oboe after a prolonged break 🌟

This blog is dear to me and is a topic I have been wanting to write about for some time. I’ve unfortunately been through 5+ injury cycles over the years—the last one lasting 2.5 years after a severe back injury until I finally met Austin at @thefunctionalmusician.

This on-again off-again dance with the oboe is one I’m all too familiar with, but I hope to bring some helpful tips to anyone who has taken time away from the oboe, be it one week or many decades.

I recently tried the @silversteinworks American scrape reed. I found it to have a lot of potential. Some very light scraping warmed up the tone and helped with response.

I did a full write up comparing it to the @legerereeds medium soft European scrape reed.

I detailed some of the adjustments I made to make these reeds work with my setup.

Overall synthetic reeds lack some of the flexibility I enjoy with cane reeds, but both products are well made and could be a good choice depending on your needs.

Feel free to DM me with questions!

**see the blog for an updated photo. My finished reeds are 68mm on a 45mm staple. The new photo shows that a bit better!
Current reed situation with several prospective mu Current reed situation with several prospective music projects now in the works. Most of these are new except my archive of EH reeds (which I’ll refresh later this fall). 😂

All I can say is I’m super excited and grateful to be working on all of this and look forward to sharing more info in the coming months!💗

One of my favorite practice habits is to record my One of my favorite practice habits is to record myself during my practice sessions and listen back for quick feedback.

I had some teachers recommend this practice hack to me (and I recommend this to my students all the freaking time...some of you follow me, you know who you are 👀 ).

But, it wasn't until a couple years after completing my undergraduate degree that I started this practice habit myself.

The main reason I stoped recording myself is because it always came with difficult self-criticism. I finally learned not to label things as "good or bad", but "it works or it doesn't work". This removes any emotional reaction to the recording—it's just helpful information.

However, I've also had a hard time finding a good microphone for the process (even though we’ve come a long way since the Mini Disc era of the early 2000’s).

My first USB microphone required headphones to listen back (output audio). This didn't work with the flow of my practice sessions. I needed to be able to quickly record a clip and listen back for immediate action without any equipment fussing.

For a while I just used my smartphone mic (which does work for intended purposes). It’s great for quick feedback and my go-to recommendation for students (since it is free).

The main downside is the quality. If you are trying to listen for an improvement in tone quality or nuances, a professional quality microphone becomes necessary. Not to mention it’s a good idea for Zoom lessons and such.

Enter the SHURE MV88—an iOS microphone that plugs directly into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. And they have a different version for other USB devices (computers and other phones).

I wrote a quick review of this mic on my blog this morning that goes over some of the pros and cons. It doesn’t “spike” like the Blue Yeti’s do (because you can control the input with the free MOTIV app).
