10 Important Life Lessons I Learned From Making Oboe Reeds

by Khara Wolf | Jan 5, 2014 | Music Education

1. Life’s Cycles There are no shortcuts when making an oboe reed. It seems to be human nature to spend our lives looking for an easier road. Making a reed requires a detailed process of cane sorting, splitting, measuring, pre-gouging, gouging, tying, and then finally...

I have been teaching a bit of flute lately and rea I have been teaching a bit of flute lately and realized I don’t have many flute resources on my website! I published a new blog with a list of some of the most common beginner and intermediate flute books I use with my students on a regular basis.

This is both a purchasing resource for them and a go-to resource for all of you.

If you are an educator, parent of a flute student, or a flute student yourself, finding the right sheet music to get started on can be hard! I hope this helps!

If your oboe reed is leaking near the thread or pa If your oboe reed is leaking near the thread or part-way up, you can seal the leak with a few different materials. Traditionally oboists have used Teflon Tape (plumbers tape) or Fish Skin. I discovered Parafilm Tape many years ago and it has been a game changer. It sticks better then Fish Skin, lit ast longer then Teflon, and it’s clear. You can remove it at any time and reapply as needed.

The video above is a short tutorial of how to apply Parafilm. You can use this same process for Teflon or Fish Skin, but just skip the “stretching” part.

The full video is available via my YouTube channel. Click the link in bio and then click on the YouTube icon.

Or, learn more about Paraflim, where to buy it, and when I use it by checking out my latest blog that covers all the details (and the full video too)! Link in bio ⇨ “latest music blog”

🌟 New Blog! Getting back in shape on the oboe a 🌟 New Blog! Getting back in shape on the oboe after a prolonged break 🌟

This blog is dear to me and is a topic I have been wanting to write about for some time. I’ve unfortunately been through 5+ injury cycles over the years—the last one lasting 2.5 years after a severe back injury until I finally met Austin at @thefunctionalmusician.

This on-again off-again dance with the oboe is one I’m all too familiar with, but I hope to bring some helpful tips to anyone who has taken time away from the oboe, be it one week or many decades.

I recently tried the @silversteinworks American scrape reed. I found it to have a lot of potential. Some very light scraping warmed up the tone and helped with response.

I did a full write up comparing it to the @legerereeds medium soft European scrape reed.

I detailed some of the adjustments I made to make these reeds work with my setup.

Overall synthetic reeds lack some of the flexibility I enjoy with cane reeds, but both products are well made and could be a good choice depending on your needs.

Feel free to DM me with questions!

**see the blog for an updated photo. My finished reeds are 68mm on a 45mm staple. The new photo shows that a bit better!
